27 Reasons to Quit Smiling

Lilith plays at a game in the garden
that even God would despise-
and this joke becomes someone else's fantasy
and I eat the fruit, only from the fear
that this desire will haunt me forever.

I watch solemnly as pavement and stars
blur together on this road while we speed away
from all that we've left behind...
The wind ushers my soul to completion,
and your hand clutching mine, reminds me
that I dare not question what lies ahead...

Angels fall from this photograph
and tears are shed for all the things we've lost
but I would give my last breath
if it meant that my final view was you.
and I would give my last word
if it would put a stop to this endless game
just so you could be free again...

I watch the universe contract, and I remember places
that the rest of the world has long since forgotten...
and I remember who stood beside me- and I remember
that it was not you... But I did not understand love-
and the soul beside me was as lifeless as my own...

And though I've found myself again
and I am made whole in your arms...
And I cannot help but stop to wonder
if she still haunts your soul
like he haunts mine...
