I clung to those words
like a flagpole in a hurricane
and all I could do was pray
that they were true...
And I held my breath while
waiting for an answer
that never came.
I am listening for your voice...
and you are distant,
like I'm hearing through
a telephone that's been
disconnected for years...
And sometimes the roar of my
heartbeat in my head can
drown out everything...
This revelation happened vicariously,
it seems.... and you never bothered
to explain, you never even offered
the chance to prove that
there is more to this than
even I can sometimes believe.
Though here I stand, transfixed
by this horror film that plays
in three dimensions just for me.
And when you move into the scene,
I bite my tongue so hard,
I often bleed.
Don't ask me what I'd rather see,
don't ask me where I'll go.
This mandatory silence you've imposed
should be enough for you.
Trust me when I say
that you don't ever want
to know just how I feel.
