The Heart Will Die As Well

I hear these words, distant
like your voice on the telephone
and I am holding back tears,
as you draw a line down the center
of the road, two blocks between -
and I still fear the monster
that lives between here and there.

I die

every time you are nearer
to me than that.
though it is almost worth the pain
to know that I was once alive.

stand in my shoes, brother
before you tell me how it feels
to be forgotten.
and I know you too well
to walk away now...
though it will be my undoing
if I remain here.

my advice to you is that
You should not complain.
You are still blinded
by the harshness of this light...
you stand, stage left -
and you don't realize
how many of these
have come to worship you.

they have given me these words
as a reminder that you and I
are far too much the same -
though this world
has embraced you... I am left behind.

Dear contestant,
it is with regret that we must inform,
you have not won today...
We thank you for your interest,
however, and encourage you
to play again the next time
this prize is made available.
