They saw what we had,
and they found desire -
they learned every inch of its surface,
a soft and unanticipated thing -
and they became entangled
in the process -
while all along, losing ground,
forgetting what brought them here-
and soon, they knew only the want.
They called for more, and once
they had destroyed all signs
of what had come before -
they called again, and soon
they had consumed all that mattered
and they believed only in themselves,
and they cared only for themselves -
And I saw the future of their path -
and watched their kingdom crumble
into dust... Though I could not be the one
who lit the match, and swallowed the flame -
So I ran... and I ran
and the swiftly growing distance
between myself and who they wanted me to be
is all I have, and though
they've taken everything else -
this emptiness, this quiet
is my salvation.
