In The Rain

Scold me, sister nightmare-
that I am too amused
to look away.

I have nothing left to do
but sit patiently, and
tangle with the scenery,
as I wait to see
what happens next.

So beautiful
I cannot close my eyes-
crimson hues and midnight blues,
and gold, the color of the sky.

average life expectancies
are now measured on a sliding scale...
I have turned down opportunity-
And now they hate me that I fail

to be like everyone else.

I understand - though they still mock me.

I was not put here like the rest.
I was not gathered up
from dust, and cast into the mold
like all believers claim to be.

I stole this secret
well before the others came
and it is here
that I will stay -
guarding it until at last

none of the monkeys remember my name.
